WWII vet, 84, claims $254M lottery prize

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - A World War II veteran and his family stepped forward Monday to claim a Powerball jackpot worth more than a quarter-billion dollars, one of the largest single-ticket lottery prizes in U.S. history. ADVERTISEMENT

Jim Wilson II, 84, and his wife, Shirley, 79, claimed the winning prize from last Wednesday’s drawing, along with their three sons. “I was absolutely astonished,” said Jim Wilson, a retired electrician who served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Africa and Europe, at an afternoon news conference. “I couldn’t believe it, and still don’t.” He bought the winning ticket — with the numbers 9-19-29-42-53 and a Powerball number of 17 — at a grocery store in St. Louis County. The store will get $50,000. When the Wilsons learned they had won, they got professional financial advice before claiming the prize. Jim Wilson II has the option of receiving $254 million in 30 payments over 29 years, or accepting a lump-sum payment worth $120 million before taxes. The couple said they will share the money with their sons. The St. Louis family has been buying family Powerball tickets for years with the understanding that they’d share any winnings, the Missouri Lottery said. Two sons — Bill, 54, and Jim III, 59 — lost their jobs in the past year, though Bill Wilson has found a new one. Another son, Terry, 53, said he hasn’t had a vacation in 30 years and will probably go to Australia. The couple also said they will set aside money for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Wilsons’ prize is the 10th-largest single-ticket lottery prize in world history, with all 10 coming from the United States, Missouri Lottery officials said. The largest was a $365 million prize won by eight Nebraska meatpacking plant workers in February 2006

Indo-Pak pact on diplomats’ movement fails to take off

Monday, January 29th, 2007
New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) An agreement between India and Pakistan to allow each other’s diplomats to move outside their capitals has failed to take off, primarily because of Islamabad’s reluctance to implement the fortnight-old decision. Pakistan government has not lifted restrictions on movement of Indian diplomats in Islamabad, official sources said here today. The issue was raised with the Pakistan government but a positive response was not forthcoming, they said. In view of Islamabad’s reluctance, India has also refused to grant permission to Pakistani diplomats from travelling to Gurgaon and Noida. During the talks between External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Pakistani counterpart Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, the two countries had agreed to allow diplomats to move outside Islamabad and New Delhi without prior permission. The two sides had agreed that while Indian diplomats will be allowed to travel to Taxila and Hassanabdal, Pakistani diplomats can go to Gurgaon and Noida. The issue was discussed in the backdrop of restrictions imposed by Pakistan on movement of Indian diplomats to Murree and Rawalpindi on the outskirts of Islamabad in violation of an earlier agreement. The matter, if not resolved, is expected to figure again at the talks between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries here on February 21. Thousands rally against Bush’s Iraq war

Sunday, January 28th, 2007
Washington, Jan 28 (PTI) Thousands of protestors, including Hollywood stars and civil rights leaders, came out on to the streets here opposing the war in Iraq ahead of a crucial debate and vote in the US Senate on the issue. The protestors, roughly estimated around 100,000, were addressed by several Hollywood stars, leaders of the civil rights movement and Congressmen critical of the manner in which President George w. Bush took America into the war in Iraq and the decision to send an additional 21,000 plus troops to the troubled country. “Thank you so much for the courage to stand up against this mean-spirited, vengeful administration. Your ongoing commitment to ending this war allows people in other parts of the world to remain hopeful that America has the stuff to become again a country that they can love and respect,” said actress Jane Fonda, a key Vietnam war era protestor. “Silence is no longer an option,” the 69-year old actress said to cheers The event, sponsored by the umbrella group ‘United For Peace and Justice’, started with a rally yesterday on the Mall and later marching towards the Capitol Hill. “George Bush has a habit of firing military leaders who tell him the Iraq war is failing. He can’t fire you. He can’t fire us. But we can fire him,” remarked senior House Democrat John Conyers, one of the speakers at the event with California Democrat Lynn Woolsey making the point that Bush’s request for additional troops is a waste of taxpayers money. Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007
Anil K Joseph
Beijing, Jan 23 (PTI) China and India, the world’s two most populous nations, have initiated discussions on stabilising the global population, Beijing’s top official on family planning said here today. “You (India) have a very young Minister of Health and Family Welfare (Anbumani Ramadoss). Actually, we have discussed cooperation in this field (India-China cooperation in the stabilisation of the global population),” Minister of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, Zhang Weiqing said to a query at a press conference here. Ramadoss had talks with Zhang in Beijing in November 2005 during a visit to China. China and India should cooperate with each other for the stability of the world and also should implement family planning policies in both countries, Zhang said while briefing the media about China’s new family planning and population control policies. He noted that China and India enjoy a long history of friendship. Currently, the two countries are experiencing very fast growth, he said adding “both of our countries could play important roles in stabilising world population and also contribute to the development of civilisation of the international community.” PTI

Pranab to visit Afghanistan tomorrow

Monday, January 22nd, 2007
New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) Security of Indians in Afghanistan, a matter of concern here, will be among the issues of discussion when External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee travels to Kabul tomorrow for two days. Mukherjee, visiting Afghanistan primarily to invite President Hamid Karzai for the 14th SAARC Summit to be held here in April, will hold talks with Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations. Discussions will also be held on ways in which India can step up its assistance in reconstruction and development of the war-ravaged country. New Delhi has already announced an increase of US $100 million in assistance from the present level of US $650 million. With Taliban witnessing resurgence of Taliban forces, security issues are expected to dominate the talks. “We would like to hear from President Karzai and other Afghan leaders as to how they see the situation developing,” an official said here. Security for Indians working in Afghanistan on various reconstruction and developmental projects remains a matter of concern, particularly in view of killing of three of their compatriots by Taliban in the last one year, he said. A number of steps have been taken to ensure their safety but discussions will be held to see if there is need for improving it. “The Afghan government has done enough for their security. We will assess if we can do anything to improve it,” the official said. PTI

Clinton launches 2008 White House bid

Saturday, January 20th, 2007
By BETH FOUHY and MARC HUMBERT, Associated Press Writers 1 hour, 30 minutes agoNEW YORK - democrat Rodham Clinton embarked on a widely anticipated campaign for the White House on Saturday, a former first lady intent on becoming the first female president. “I’m in and I’m in to win,” she said on her Web site. Clinton’s announcement, days after Sen. Barack Obama shook up the contest race with his bid to become the first black president, establishes the most diverse political field ever. Clinton is considered the front-runner, with Obama and 2004 vice presidential Edwards top contenders. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic president, intends to announce his plans on Sunday. “You know after six George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America,” Clinton says in a videotaped message in which she invites voters to begin a dialogue with her on the major issues — health Security and Medica”I’m not just starting a campaign, though, I’m beginning a conversation with you, with America,” she said. “Let’s talk. Let’s chat. The conversation in Washington has been just a little one-sided lately, don’t you think?” Clinton, who was re-elected to a second term last November, said she will spend the next two years “doing everything in my power to limit the damage George W. Bush can do. But only a new president will be able to undo Bush’s mistakes and restore our hope and optimism.” In a defiant statement — and a nod to questions about her electability — Clinton said: “I have never been afraid to stand up for what I believe in or to face down the Republican machine. After nearly $70 million spent against my campaigns in New York and two landslide wins, I can say I know how Washington Republicans think, how they operate, and how to beat them.” With millions in the bank, a vast network of supporters and top status in nearly every poll of Democratic contenders, Clinton is undertaking the most viable effort by a female candidate to capture the White House. Her creation of a presidential exploratory committee allows her to raise money for the campaign; she already has lined up campaign staff. She is the first presidential spouse to pursue the office; her husband, Bill, served two terms in the White House from 1993-2001. Obama said in a statement soon after Clinton’s entry, “I welcome her and all the candidates, not as competitors, but as allies in the work of getting our country back on track.” Clinton’s announcement was the latest step in a remarkable political and personal journey for the 59-year-old Clinton — from Arkansas lawyer to first lady to New York senator to front-runner for the Democratic nomination. A polarizing figure since she burst onto the national scene during her husband’s first presidential campaign, Clinton engenders strong opinions among voters, who either revere or revile her but rarely are ambivalent. She often is compared to her husband and found lacking in his natural charisma. Others have criticized her for being overly cautious and calculating when so many voters say they crave authenticity. Many Democrats, eager to reclaim the White House after eight President Bush, fret that she carries too much baggage from her husband’s scandal-plagued presidency to win a general election. Among many voters, she is best known for her disastrous attempt in 1993 to overhaul the nation’s health care system and for standing by her husband after his marital infidelity. Clinton’s allies counter by citing her strengths — intelligence, depth of experience, work ethic and immense command of policy detail. Advisers argue those skills, plus her popularity among women and younger voters, position her strongly as both a primary and general election candidate. In her first run for the Senate from New York in 2000 — a state where she had never lived and where she was branded a carpetbagger by many — Clinton won a landslide victory. Through dogged campaigning — including a “listening tour” of the state’s 62 counties — Clinton was able to convince voters even in the conservative upstate region that she would represent them effectively in Washington. Clinton’s 2002 vote authorizing military force in Iraq has become a significant political challenge. It angered activists who want her to repudiate her vote and aggressively seek to block Bush’s proposed troop increase. She has toughened her criticism of the conduct of the war and Bush’s handling of the conflict, and she recently called for capping troop levels in Iraq at around 140,000. She has rejected calls from liberal groups and Edwards to cut off funds for Bush’s planned increase in U.S. troops. Clinton grew up in the Chicago suburbs in a conservative Republican household and was a “Goldwater girl” in 1964, supporting conservative icon Barry Goldwater in the presidential race won by Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson. By 1968, she was a Democrat. After graduating from Wellesley College, she attended law school at Yale where she met her husband Bill Clinton. In 1974, she work House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment investigation of President Nixon before moving to Arkansas where she and Clinton were married in 1975. An influential player in her husband’s political career in Arkansas, she leapt to the national scene during the 1992 presidential campaign when the two fought to survive the scandal over Gennifer Flowers’ allegations of a lengthy affair with Clinton when he was the state’s governor. The Clintons appeared together on CBS’ “60 Minutes” to talk about their marriage — her first famous “Stand by Your Man” moment. As first lady, Clinton headed up a disastrous first-term effort to overhaul the health care insurance system. There was more controversy as the couple battled allegations of impropriety over land deals and fundraising, missing records from her former Arkansas law firm and even her quick and hefty profits from an investment in cattle futures. There was no letup in the second term. The president found himself denying — then admitting — having a sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. As he battled impeachment and possible removal from office, his wife’s poll numbers rose. Her own political career began to take shape in late 1998 when New York Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan announced he would not seek re-election to the Senate seat he had held since 1976. Within a few weeks, the first lady was being talked up by fellow Democrats as a possible successor for the veteran senator. On Feb. 12, 1999, the very day the Senate was voting not to remove her husband from office, Clinton met in the White House’s family quarters with New York Democrat Harold Ickes, a former Clinton administration deputy chief of staff, to talk about a Senate run. The campaign trail was not always friendly. For almost every cheer, there was a shouted “Go home, Hillary!” and the emerging Republican theme that carpetbagger Clinton simply wanted to use New York as a launching pad for a later presidential run. She pledged to serve her full six-year Senate term if elected. In the Senate, Clinton quickly moved to establish herself as someone who could work with Republicans or Democrats, often sponsoring high-profile legislation with GOP colleagues. ___ Associated Press Writer Marc Humbert reported from Albany, N.Y Tags:
