Teens Surrender after Setting Hollywood Hills on Fire

Saturday, March 31st, 2007
Two teens from Illinois accidentally started a 160-acre blaze in the Hollywood Hills on Friday. The fire also sent smoke over the famed Hollywood sign and threatened an apartment building. About 200 or 300 firefighters battled the fire, assisted by water-dropping helicopters, according to Ron Myers of the Los Angeles city fire department. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa held an evening news conference at Forest Lawn, where he said the blaze had been deliberately set. “They’ve admitted that they started this fire,” Villaraigosa said of the 16- and 17-year-old boys, who voluntarily turned themselves in to Burbank police and were later taken to the LAPD’s Hollywood Station. Apparently, the two teenagers were seen setting off fireworks about 1 p.m. near the Oakwood apartments. “They were old enough to know what they were doing,” said Villaraigosa, adding that the boys first told their parents about setting the fire before together calling police. The fire spread very close to an Oakwood apartment building, stopping, due to intense precautions, to about 50 feet of its parking lot. Apartment maintenance workers wetted down the hillside and turned on sprinklers on the roof of the apartments and on the hillside. The facility is reportedly known for housing out-of-town actors looking for their big break in Hollywood. “It’s something you don’t want to see in your backyard, that’s for sure,” said actor and apartment resident Travis Caldwell, 18, quoted by presstelegram.com. “It was nuts. It started so small and it just raced right up the hill.” The smoke caused severe discomfort for the people in the area, including the employees at the Warner Bros. studios nearby. Reports that the legendary Hollywood sign was actually threatened are false. While it was engulfed in smoke at some point, the actual fire was about a quarter mile away and across a canyon, fire officials said. The current Hollywood sign was unveiled in 1978. The first sign was erected as an advertisement in 1923 and actually read “HOLLYWOODLAND,” because it was advertising a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.

Bob Woolmer ‘murdered by match-fixing mafia

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007
Devastated Pakistani cricketers took to the field in their final World Cup match today amid claims coach Bob Woolmer had been murdered by the “match-fixing mafia”. Police revealed last night they are treating the former England batsman’s death in Jamaica at the weekend as “suspicious” but stopped short of suggesting that he had been murdered. Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious by staff at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Sunday morning, the day after Pakistan’s shock defeat to cricketing minnows Ireland, and taken to hospital where he later died. The hotel room remained closed off today with investigations ongoing, a spokesman for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said. He also refused to confirm or deny unconfirmed reports that marks had been found on the 58-year-old’s neck or that traces of poison had been found. Former Pakistani fast-bowler Sarfraz Nawaz claimed that Woolmer had been murdered as part of a match-fixing plot. “Woolmer’s death has some connection with the match-fixing mafia,” he told the Associated Press. “I’ve been saying this for the last four days that Woolmer’s death is not natural, but it’s a murder.” But Woolmer’s wife Gill told Indian television station NDTV: “No, I don’t see any conspiracy in his death. “I am aware that his death is being viewed as a suspicious death. “He had nothing to do with the match-fixing controversy and any such person being involved is highly unlikely. “We never got any threats as far as I know.” Today, as Pakistan took to the field for its scheduled Group D match against Zimbabwe, a minute’s silence was observed by both teams as a mark of respect. The Pakistani cricketers wore black armbands for the game at Sabina Park - their last at the tournament in the West Indies after the weekend’s defeat ended their chances of reaching the next stage. The game only went ahead after a meeting between the team management and officials from the local police, the ICC and Cricket World Cup last night. It was also retiring captain Inzamam-ul-Haq’s final one-day international. He said: “It’s a tough time for me because the coach is not here. The whole team is disturbed. “But we will be trying our level best and try to win this game and honour Bob Woolmer.” Zimbabwe batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri said: “It’s hit the guys pretty hard. It’s a big blow for world cricket.” Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bowl first. Last night, following an announcement that tests had been “inconclusive”, deputy police commissioner Mark Shields said a full investigation was being carried out. “Having met with the pathologist, other medical personnel and investigators there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious,” he said. “We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development, but we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and the International Cricket Council to ensure that all the parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation.” Asked if he was saying that Woolmer had been murdered, Mr Shields said: “No, we are not saying that.” The spokesman added today: “When we say suspicious we don’t rule anything out.” He added: “I have not been told by any of the investigating officers that there was poison or anything like that.” More tributes were paid in the UK today. Former Warwickshire chief executive Dennis Amiss gave his backing to the idea of a permanent memorial at Edgbaston. During Woolmer’s time as coach of Warwickshire, the county won the NatWest Trophy in 1993 and the treble of County Championship, Sunday League and Benson & Hedges Cup the following year. Mr Amiss said: “A permanent memorial to Bob Woolmer by Warwickshire would be a fitting tribute. “He brought great honour to the club. I know the club were thinking of doing something to honour Bob and everyone at the club is very proud of what he achieved for Warwickshire. “He helped them to dominate the game, winning so many trophies. He was a wonderful coach, the first of the modern-day coaches with the laptop analysis of things. “He was totally involved at the club, not only with the players but their families. He was a true Bear.” Earlier, Kent County Cricket Club chairman Carl Openshaw said: “Bob Woolmer was a marvellous man who I knew well from an early age and I had a great regard for him, as everyone did, as a tremendous cricketer for Kent and one of the most successful coaches in world cricket.” He added that the announcement that the death was being treated as suspicious had come as a surprise. “It’s clearly inconclusive and there is no point in someone in my position trying to give an opinion on that. It’s a matter for the medical teams. I have absolutely nothing to say until something is conclusive.” source : Associated Press 2007. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

Jihad is an inner war: SHAH RUKH KHAN

Sunday, March 18th, 2007
Born a Muslim and brought up and married to a Hindu, Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood’s brand ambassador. The star of Bollywood, who is all the time all over the place, is troubled lately by the happenings in the Islamic world. At the same time, he feels it is important for him to stand up and be counted, “to be standing for the goodness of Islam”. As much an ambassador for Islam as Bollywood, Shah Rukh says his childhood fascination with the Ram Lila hasn’t changed. “But as I’ve grown older, and I see what’s happening to Islam around the world, I think it’s important that even without full knowledge of Islam, I need to be very clearly standing for the goodness of Islam.” In an interview with the weekly news magazine, Tehelka, the Bollywood icon whose children are being brought up by the tenets of both religions says he stands for what a modern Muslim should be. “I’d like people to know that Islam is not only about being a fanatic, or radically different, angered person, or one who only does jihad. I’d like people to know that the actual meaning of jihad is to overcome one’s own violence and weakness. If need be, overcome it violently,” says Shah Rukh. In an interview where he lays bare his soul, he gives a fascinating insight into his identity as a Muslim, a husband, a father, a son and a brother. Shah Rukh says of his elder sister, who lives with him: “My sister reminds me everyday that I cannot have a life like my father’s.” His sister, Lala, was medically described as having a potassium imbalance and physically, she went all wrong. SRK, who has often spoken of his anguish at his parents’ early deaths — his father when he was 15 and his mother when he was just 25 — reveals unknown facts about his sister who was traumatised by their deaths. Lala is much better now, but will never be fully well. “Beautiful girl — physically and mentally, again an MA, LLB (like his father). But no good. After my father died, she got very shocked. Psychiatry wasn’t so big then, it took us about four or five years to find help. Then it took five-six years for her to get very close to her mom, and then her mom died, so she was really shattered,” he told Tehelka. By the time she came to Mumbai, she was really unwell, and it took time for SRK to earn enough after which he got her treated in London. When he prays, he says, the closest he comes to a face are his mother and father — and his dogs! “I love my dog — Chewbacca. Is that blasphemous?” he asks. We know of Shah Rukh Khan always talking about his son, Aryan, but so little of his daughter, Suhana. He claims that is because he’s basically “shy of women”. He finds it difficult to play too long with her friends too, and adds that he’s never seen the inside of his wife’s cupboard, or her handbag, or her drawers, or whatever though he married her more than 15 years ago. Strangely, his closest friends are women — Farah Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol — and most his male friends like Karan Johar are known to be on the effeminate side, too. His shyness with women extends to his not being able to “pick up a lover” or make a pass. Even if a girl takes the initiative, he quickly kills it with jesting. Often rammed for dancing in marriages for money, SRK reveals the why and how: “I do perform at weddings. But it is very difficult to afford what I demand. You have to do it like a show, it has to be in an area where nobody drinks and eats, it will start at 9 pm and end at 11:30 pm, the stage will be 30 by 40 feet, we will make our entries, we will not chat with anyone, we will not eat your food, we will not take pictures with your daughter or daughter-in-law, unless we personally want to. We will come, perform, and we will go away.” The Bollywood Big Dad is not into watching too many films either for fear of getting “corrupted” or “confused” depending on whether it does well or fails. He was supposed to be part of ‘Rang De Basanti’ and the project was lying with him for about a year. “I was shocked by the fact that I couldn’t read into the script. I just didn’t see any of it,” he readily admits. Shah Rukh Khan also admits that he didn’t like close friend Aditya Chopra’s huge hit ‘Dhoom 2′ because “it lacked sensibility”. - (SAMPURN) source : google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com   http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

Reliance washes hands off ailing Super Bazar

Thursday, March 15th, 2007
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries today opted out of the race to revive the capital’s defunct shopping cooperative Super Bazar, citing the government’s reluctance in giving it full management control.
Senior counsel Soli Sorabjee, appearing for Reliance, submitted before the Supreme Court that the company has decided to withdraw its takeover bid as the government had refused to amend the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 to enable it gain overall management control. A Bench headed by Justice B P Singh also accepted Reliance’s plea to withdraw Rs five crore earnest money deposited with the official liquidator, appointed by the court to look into the affairs of Super Bazar. Reliance had evinced interest in reviving Super Bazar and had put in the highest bid of Rs 288 crore. However, the bid was opposed by Indian Potash Ltd (IPL), which in a joint bid with the Indian Labour Cooperative Society (ILCS), had offered to match the offer. The government had invited bids in May 2006 after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to examine ways to revive the cooperative super market. The bench also asked the counsels appearing for the government, IPL and ILCS to consult Registrar of Cooperative Societies on the issue and submit a report in a week indicating steps to be taken to work out the modalities of the revival scheme. It also directed the IPL-ILCS combine to deposit the money in the court for employees’ liabilities so as to secure them. The matter will come up for further hearing on March 21. source : PTI. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

VIACOM SUES YOU TUBE , GOOGLE

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007
Viacom, the owner of such shows as “The Colbert Report” and “Laguna Beach,” sued YouTube for $1 billion on Monday, charging the popular online video site with inappropriately publishing more than 160,000 of Viacom’s clips. Viacom also sued Google, which acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion last year. “There is no question that YouTube and Google are continuing to take the fruit of our efforts without permission and destroying enormous value in the process,” Viacom said in a statement. “Therefore, we must turn to the courts to prevent Google and YouTube from continuing to steal value from artists and to obtain compensation for the significant damage have caused.” Under current laws, YouTube must remove copyrighted clips once the owner has identified and alerted the company about them. Last month, Viacom ordered YouTube to take down some 100,000 clips. YouTube said it complied — and indeed, a search for certain shows turns up a notice that the clip has been removed because it violates copyright rules. But as quickly as Viacom finds one clip and asks YouTube to delete it, more are posted by different users. In a statement, Google said that it is “confident that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders and believe the courts will agree.” The copyright problem has been ongoing almost since YouTube’s inception. But YouTube contends that its users — usually fans of the show — have helped build buzz, such as generating increased interest in “Saturday Night Live” and the Late Show with David Letterman. Meanwhile, YouTube has formed more than 100,000 partnerships with media companies to post authorized clips online, including CBS. Some legal experts believe that, up until now, media companies have held off from suing because it means a long and costly battle against Google, a formidable company with more than enough resources to fight back. But the lawsuit could also be a negotiation tactic; up until last month, Viacom and YouTube had been in negotiations to publish authorized clips on the site and share the advertising revenue. source :GOOGLE NEWS http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

Ford puts Aston Martin in ejector seat

Monday, March 12th, 2007
FORD is close to agreeing to the £450 million ($A1.1 billion) sale of the classic Aston Martin British car business to a consortium led by motor enthusiast David Richards. The US car maker is being forced to sell the luxury sports car brand in an effort to repair its balance sheet, but will retain about 15 per cent of the business. Mr Richards has secured backing from Kuwaiti companies Investment Dar and Adeem Investment. Another name mentioned as a backer is Naeem Capital, part of an Egyptian investment bank. Mr Richards is also said to have won support from US investors. Investment funds from the Gulf region are eager to diversify and have been buying up assets in Britain including Madame Tussauds, P&O and Veridian, the main electricity supplier in Northern Ireland. The agreement between Ford and the consortium has been hailed by fans of the quintessentially British car as a great day for British motoring. Mr Richards, 54, a former accountant, is the founder of Prodrive, the group that runs Aston Martin’s racing team, and has long harboured ambitions to run his own manufacturing operation. He is the former head of the BAR Honda and Benetton formula one teams and he has a private collection of classic Aston Martins. Barring any last-minute hitches, he will become Aston Martin chairman. Prodrive had been planning to enter its own formula one team in 2008, although that could now be in doubt. The Aston Martin chief executive, German-born Ulrich Bez, has overseen a remarkable turnaround in the marque’s fortunes, and is expected to remain in the company. In 1992, production skidded as low as 46 cars. Under Mr Bez, that figure has risen to 7000 cars rolling off the production line last year, and the company is in profit. Mr Richard’s medium-term ambition is to increase that number to 10,000, reports suggest. He also plans to keep building the Aston Martin range, including the Rapide, a new four-door coupe. Aston Martin has had a long and fruitful association with the James Bond films. Daniel Craig was behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBS in Casino Royale. Ford took a controlling stake in Aston Martin in 1987 and acquired full ownership in 1994. Ford last year lost $US12.7 billion and announced plans to lay off 44,000 workers and close 16 plants. Ford could now turn its attention to the sale of its other two luxury British car makers, Jaguar and Land Rover.  source : GUARDIAN http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

Sacked Pak Chief Justice asks for open trial

Islamabad, Mar 11 (PTI) Sacked Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftakar Muhammad Chaudhry today asked for an open trial by the Supreme Judicial Council to adjudicate the allegations of misconduct and misuse of authority leveled against him by President Pervez Musharraf. Chaudhry, who has been kept incommunicado by the government after he was sacked on Friday and sent home with police escort, was permitted to meet this evening retired Air Marshal Asgha Ali Khan. Khan told the media after meeting the sacked Chief Justice that Chaudhry firmly denied allegations against him and asked SJC to conduct an open trial by permitting media and lawyers’ fraternity. SJC has asked Chaudhry to appear before it to contest the charges. Khan said Chaudhry has been confined to his house for the past two days and denied access to telephone, TV and newspapers. He was totally kept under incommunicado, he said. Earlier Chaudhry told Supreme Court Bar Association President Munir A Malik yesterday on phone that he would contest the allegations against him. “I will never resign voluntarily. I have done nothing wrong,” Chaudhry responded when he was contacted on phone by Malik during a press conference. PTI
