Glucose may affect more pregnancies

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007
Expectant mothers are warned frequently of the dangers of gestational diabetes. Now, doctors say a wider range of pregnant women may need to be concerned about high blood-sugar levels.   Although most expectant mothers in the United States are tested for glucose levels, only women with blood sugar above a certain point and with no history of diabetes are officially diagnosed with the gestational diabetes. The condition affects about 4 percent of pregnant women. If gestational diabetes is not treated through diet or insulin, large amounts of glucose can be transmitted to the fetus via the placenta. In addition to higher birth weight and increased risk of birth complications, high fetal glucose also can trigger increased production of insulin in the fetus, which scientists link with obesity and diabetes as the baby grows up. The new study sought to establish the effect of less severe levels of blood sugar during pregnancy. “One of the issues is where on the spectrum of normal to abnormal does glucose in pregnancy begin to have a clinically significant effect on the outcome of the pregnancy,” said Boyd Metzger, principal investigator of the study and professor of medicine at Northwestern University. “That’s the big unanswered question.” To help answer it, researchers measured glucose levels and pregnancy outcome in nearly 25,000 women from nine countries, including the United States. They found that women with the highest measured blood glucose were six times more likely to have an overweight baby and 10 times more likely to have a newborn with elevated blood insulin than women with the lowest levels of glucose. However, women in a range just below established criteria for gestational diabetes were still two to four times more likely to deliver a baby with high birth weight or elevated insulin levels. “This study will finally give us the chance to reach a consensus in all countries on how to diagnose diabetes in pregnancy,” said one of the authors, Dr. Moshe Hod, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Tel Aviv University. Metzger said more discussion will be necessary before any changes are made to guidelines for diagnosis of gestational diabetes and treatment of high glucose levels. “You can’t point to [a] number and say this is obviously the point” of diagnosis, he said.

Atlantis skips first landing attempt at Kennedy

Friday, June 22nd, 2007
Houston: Mission controllers, determined to land space shuttle Atlantis today, had to call off the first de-orbit attempt as weather refused to cooperate at the Kennedy Space Centre to bring back seven astronauts, including Indian-American Sunita Williams.
Rain showers in the vicinity of Kennedy Space Centre forced mission managers to skip the first try which would have brought the shuttle to earth at 2348 IST.
The crew and the Mission Control team have turned their attention to the next orbit, which has opportunities available at Kenndy and at Edwards Air Force Base, California at 0125 IST and 0119 IST respectively.

Sunita reminded of dangers of spaceflight by recent problems

Sunday, June 17th, 2007
With Atlantis being cleared for return to earth after repair of its thermal shield, Indian- American astronaut Sunita Williams on Sunday said the problems faced by the US space shuttle showed that spaceflight is “still dangerous”. “We take spaceflight for granted and it’s still pretty dangerous,” Williams, who set to return to Earth on Thursday after setting a record for the longest uninterrupted space flight by a woman, said at a press conference from space. Atlantis was on Saturday given clearance to return to Earth next week, as the shuttle’s heat shield, which suffered a tear during lift off on Friday, was repaired by Mission Specialist Danny Olivas. Adding to NASA’s concerns was the failure of computers that control the space station’s ability to orient itself and produce oxygen. But NASA officials said the crew was never in danger of running out of oxygen, power or essentials. “We are living in an environment that is not really friendly for humans ….(The space station is) not just a tourist vacation place. It’s a serious place and we are doing serious business and serious science up here,” said 41-year-old Williams, who began her space journey on December 10. NASA has been sensitive about the space shuttle’s heat shield ever since the Columbia accident killed seven astronauts, including India-born Kalpana Chawla, in 2003. A piece of insulating foam from the shuttle’s external tank came loose during launch, striking Columbia’s wing and allowing fiery gases to penetrate it during re-entry. source : press trust of india http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

India appears set to get first woman president

Thursday, June 14th, 2007
New Delhi: India’s ruling coalition announced Thursday it was giving the country its first woman president by declaring the candidature of Pratibha Patil, the Rajasthan governor but not a high profile politician, after an adamant Left refused to back Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s candidature.
If elected, the 72-year-old soft-spoken Congress leader from Maharashtra will be the nation’s 12th president. All the previous occupants of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace, have been men, including incumbent A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who steps down next month after an eventful five-year tenure.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who for days had been at the centre of the intense parleys over picking a nominee of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), made the formal announcement saying it was a “historic moment” for India.
“It is a matter of great pride for the nation that on the historic moment of the 60th anniversary of our independence, we will have a woman president,” Gandhi told UPA leaders at 7 Race Course Road, the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Gandhi said the decision was arrived at “through the process of consultations” involving the multi-party UPA, the Left and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which together command an overwhelming majority in the electoral college that elects the president.
Thursday was a day of hectic political activity in the national capital, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi playing the critical mediator’s role after flying in from Chennai late Wednesday to bridge what at one seemed were irreconcilable differences between the Congress and the Left.
It was the veteran DMK leader who indicated in the evening that there was consensus on “a woman candidate”. In no time, Congress sources made it known that the person was Pratibha Patil, a politician-cum-social activist from Jalgaon in Maharashtra who has held a variety of posts both in the state and elsewhere since taking to politics way back in 1962. She was six times cabinet minister in Maharashtra, has been member of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, and in 2004 was named the Rajasthan governor, a post she holds now. It was clear that Pratibha Patil’s choice was also related to the fact that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was going to prop up Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, a veteran politician who has served as chief minister of Rajasthan, for the presidential elections due July 19.
Pratibha Patil, a Rajput, is married to a Maratha, Devisingh Ranisingh Shekhawat.
Once an advocate in Jalgaon, Pratibha Patil is a post-graduate in arts and law, having studied both in the small town and in Mumbai. She was first elected to the Maharashtra assembly in 1962. She remained a member of the house until 1988.
From 1967 to 1972, she was a deputy minister in the Maharashtra government, and then from 1972 to 1978 was a cabinet minister in the state holding several portfolios. She was the opposition leader in the Maharashtra assembly in 1979-80.
For two years from 1986, Pratibha Patil was deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Widely travelled, she was last elected to the Lok Sabha in 1991, in the general election marred by the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Besides having been president of the Maharashtra Congress chapter, she is credited with establishing hostels for “working women” in Mumbai and New Delhi, an engineering college at Jalgaon for rural youth, a women’s cooperative bank also at Jalgaon, and schools for poor children in Maharashtra.
Pratibha Patil’s choice as UPA’s presidential candidate took the nation by surprise considering the high profile nature of Shivraj Patil, who lost the race only because of the resistance put up by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and its allies. Although the Left never said publicly that it was opposed to Shivraj Patil, communist sources let it be known that they doubted the secular credentials of the minister who is known to be a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, a leading godman based in Puttaparthi town in Andhra Pradesh.
Once it was evident that Shivraj Patil would not be able to make it to the presidential palace, the names of Power Minister SushilKumar Shinde and Congress veteran Karan Singh were brandied about. But pro-Left sources hinted that they disapproved of even Karan Singh, the scion of Kashmir’s royal family.
The Left remained adamant on blocking names it did not like even after Karunanidhi announced that he would go with anyone the Congress chose as its presidential nominee.
Early Thursday, Karunanidhi held discussions with Left leaders and then met Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi. He again got in touch with the Left, leading to a joint meeting of the Left and UPA where Pratibha Patil’s name was picked.
Amid the UPA confusion, the BJP-led NDA was preparing to put up a strong fight, by probably fielding Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Shekhawat is known to have wide connections among India’s political class and could be counted to draw votes even from sections of the UPA, making him a formidable contestant.
“This is the reason we have to ensure the Left support,” one Congress leader told. source : msn news . http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

RISK FACTOR FOR SUNBURN

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007
Health Tip - Certain people are more susceptible to sunburn than others because of age, skin type or medications they are taking. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says these factors increase a person’s risk of sunburn: Babies and children have skin that is more sensitive than adult skin, so they are more likely to be badly sunburned if unprotected.
People with fair skin are more likely to get a sunburn than people with darker skin — although all skin types and complexions can burn.
Certain medications, including some antibiotics and birth control pills, can increase the likelihood of a sunburn.
Using a tanning bed can cause dangerous sunburns.
Being outside during the sun’s peak hours — 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. — and being on reflective sand or water can increase one’s risk of severe sunburn. source : yahoo news http://www.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Paris Hilton released from LA jail

Thursday, June 7th, 2007
LOS ANGELES -Paris Hilton was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Thursday because of an unspecified medical problem and will fulfill the reminder of her sentence in home confinement, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress was sent home shortly after 2 a.m. fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet. She had spent five days at the Century Regional Detention Facility in suburban Los Angeles for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. “I can’t specifically talk about the medical situation other than to say that, yes, it played a part in this,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. Hilton had been sentenced to 45 days behind bars, but had been expected to serve 23 days because of state rules allowing shorter sentences for good behavior. Whitmore said that under the new agreement, Hilton would be confined to her home for 40 days. “Because she has agreed to this through her attorney, her sentence is now back up to the 45 days. She has served already five days so that’s 40 days,” he explained. Hilton checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She had surrendered to authorities with little fanfare after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, where she worked the red carpet in a strapless designer gown. “I am trying to be strong right now,” she told reporters at the time. “I’m ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that’s really helpful.” Hilton was housed in the “special needs” unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She didn’t have a cellmate. After she checked in Sunday, Whitmore said Hilton’s demeanor was helpful. “She was focused; she was cooperative,” he said. Hilton’s lawyer, Richard A. Hutton, said Monday after his client’s first night in jail that she was doing well under the circumstances. “She’s using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people,” Hutton said after visiting Hilton. The 13-year-old jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath a bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006. It’s located in an industrial area about 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail. Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines. She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by sheriff’s deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with violating probation. source : associated press http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.commonwealthtv.tv

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 5TH JUNE 2007

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The World Environment Day slogan selected for 2007 is Melting Ice – a Hot Topic? In support of International Polar Year, the WED theme selected for 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world. The main international celebrations of the World Environment Day 2007 will be held in Norway. UNEP is honoured that the City of Tromsø will be hosting this United Nations day. The day’s agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people’s event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns. When did it all begin? World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP. How can you celebrate World Environment Day? World Environment Day can be celebrated in many ways, including street rallies, bicycles parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more. In many countries, this annual event is used to enhance political attention and action. Heads of State, Prime Ministers and Ministers of Environment deliver statements and commit themselves to care for the Earth. More serious pledges are made which lead to the establishment of permanent governmental structures dealing with environmental management and economic planning. This observance also provides an opportunity to sign or ratify international environmental conventions. On this World Environment Day, let us examine the state of our environment. Let us consider carefully the actions which each of us must take, and then address ourselves to our common task of preserving all life on earth in a mood of sober resolution and quiet confidence. source : The environment agency 2007 http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.commonwealthtv.tv
