Cell phones quickly becoming portable entertainment devices

Monday, December 31st, 2007

All of the entertainment options that are hot on the PC—social networking, web video, user-generated content—are downright torrid on the smallest of screens, the cell phone. New research from Deloitte & Touche finds that 47 percent of 25-41 year olds use their cell phones for entertainment, a massive surge from the 29 percent who said they did so only eight short months ago. And where the eyeballs go, there go both the ad dollars and the aspirations of many businessmen.

The Hollywood Reporter has prerelease numbers from Deloitte’s “State of the Media Democracy” report, and those numbers show surging growth in using cell phones for more than chatting. 20 percent of those polled said that they watch video on their phone daily or almost daily. Since that’s an average, we have to assume that the number is far higher among 13-24 year olds, 62 percent of whom now say they use their cell phones as entertainment devices. That sort of growth naturally attracts entrepreneurs who want to capitalize on the popularity of Internet-enabled mobile devices. Money can be made either by selling content directly or by selling ads on content that consumers want to view (but not badly enough to pay for). So far, advertising on mobile devices has been hampered by consumer resistance and small screen sizes, but the Deloitte study makes clear that consumers are willing to endure even intrusive ads in return for content they want. Yea verily, we are a nation of cheap sods. Content owners have been accustomed to locking down the experience on mobile devices, but opening a full connection to the web (which the iPhone, for instance, does superbly) necessarily removes much of that control. Mobile operators that have been able to offer proprietary video and chatting services (among others) at premium prices will increasingly find themselves competing with free, ad-supported offerings delivered through a device’s Internet connection. The pressure will hopefully be enough to push back strongly against proprietary lock-in and DRMed offerings. But ad-supported services on cell phones have their drawbacks, too, and some companies are hesitant to jump in. A phone can still feel uniquely personal, making the most lucrative form of advertising (highly specific, even location-based targeting) feel intrusive. The Associated Press is running an article on that very problem, in fact. After all, no advertiser wants to annoy potential customers. “It’s proceed with caution,” said Burst Media’s CEO, Jarvis Coffin, in the piece. “Are consumers going to be spooked by the idea that suddenly their phone goes beep and it’s a Starbucks offer, and they are standing next to a Starbucks?” Short answer: yes. Still, like anything else in the world, people will probably get used to more invasive cell phone ads. Google, a supremely talented data aggregator and ad sales company, has been pushing hard to enter the mobile space, rolling out projects like Android and preparing to bid on wireless spectrum early next year. Other companies are following suit. How much privacy will users be willing to trade for cheap cell phone plans or free services? We’ll start to find out next year.   source: google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Taslima asks Centre to reconsider

Friday, December 21st, 2007
This time it is not the Marxists but the UPA government that has decided that controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen cannot return to her adopted city of Kolkata. Moreover, Nasreen has been told that if she wants to live in Delhi, she will not be allowed to take part in any public functions. Taslima Nasreen said that the decision had been communicated officially to her by a senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs. Nasreen also claimed that her security was cited as the reason for the Centre’s decision. The controversial author, who has already withdrawn parts of her writing considered offensive to certain Muslim groups, has been in hiding for the past month. Breaking down on the telephone, she claimed that she was being made to live under house arrest. ‘’I appeal to the government to change its mind,'’ she said. Nasreen also asserted that she will leave India if she is refrained from returning to Kolkata. The author has been in a government safe house since November and has courted trouble over her perceived anti-Islamic writings. Taslima says she has been placed under virtual house arrest but the Home Minister has refused to comment on this. Meanwhile, the CPM, which had sent Taslima off to Jaipur last month, washed its hands off her, saying that this was between Taslima and the government. ‘’It is between Taslima and the Central government and we have nothing to do with this,'’ said Shyamal Chakravarthy, Leader, CPM. The Congress party too reiterated its earlier stand that no one who is allowed to stay in India can hurt the sentiments of the people. While the government adopts an indifferent attitude, there are some voices of support for Taslima. Shaonli Mitra a Theatre personality said, ‘’I don’t know Taslima personally, neither am I fond of her writings. But I think it is shameful on the part of the Indian government to have conveyed this message to her. It shows India in poor light.'’ Kaushik Sen another theatre personality, said ‘’Taslima must come back to Kolkata. She loves this city and wants to stay here. She must be allowed to come back. What is happening with her can set a dangerous precedent. If you don’t like her writing, don’t read her books but she must be given freedom of expression.'’ He said that some mobs will demand something in future and we will have to give in.

Pravin gets life for killing Pramod Mahajan

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007
MUMBAI (Reuters) - A Mumbai court sentenced Pravin Mahajan to life imprisonment on Tuesday for shooting and killing his brother and top BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, apparently over a money dispute last year. Pravin Mahajan shot his older brother Pramod, a former federal minister and high-profile backroom manager of India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at the victim’s home in Mumbai. Mahajan, regarded as a possible future head of the BJP, died after 12 days in hospital at the age of 56. Police had said Pravin, who surrendered to the police shortly after the shooting, had confessed to the murder but later retracted the statement in court. The prosecution said Pravin, who did not have a steady job, was angry after Pramod refused his demand for a large sum of money. Ujjwal Nikam, the prosecution counsel, told reporters that the prosecution may ask the Mumbai High Court where the trial took place to increase the sentence to the death penalty. “The case has been solved,” Gopinath Munde, the Mahajans’ brother-in-law, told reporters, stood alongside Pramod’s wife and son. “The important thing is that the court has found him guilty.” source: google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Mobile Phones Can Cause Mouth Cancer

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007
Earlier, lots of studies were conducted in regards to mobile phone usage and its hazardous effects. TechGadgets.in has reported that ten minutes of talking on the phone increases the risk of brain cancer. Later, there was news that warned to keep children away from phones that led to brain tumor. Recently, a researcher from Israel has carried out a study, which concluded that mobile phones also cause mouth cancer. A team of international researchers, led by Dr. Siegal Sadetzki from the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Hashomer in Israel, found out that frequent use of mobile phones raise the chance of people being affected by malignant mouth tumors. Before revealing this, they analyzed the effects of mobile phones on users in Israel. However Sadetzki was skeptical about drawing any conclusion. He commented, “Until more evidence becomes available we believe that the precautionary approach currently adopted by most scientific committees and applied by many governments should continue.” With a control group of 1,266 people, researches judged against the lifestyle of 402 people with benign mouth tumors and 56 having malignant ones. As per the study, those who are in constant mobile phone habit are more likely to develop parotid gland tumor, as compared to the normal people. It is said that people who have used phones for around five years have greater chances of facing a tumor. Numerically explaining, approx. 50 percent of frequent users of mobiles can suffer with the disease, compared to the people who had never used one. According to the report, parotid is the largest of the salivary glands located in front of the ear. Long-term mobile phone users tend to develop tumors on the same side of the head as the phone was normally held. The research also mentioned that rural area people have to work harder to make contact with the nearest base station, while using mobile phones. Thus, they are at greater risk. However, the extent of the risk was not revealed. source : google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Cricketers fly off to Australia

Monday, December 17th, 2007
Skipper Anil Kumble and his teammates on Monday left for Australia bidding to create history by becoming the first Indian team to conquer the Aussies in their own backyard. Kumble and his men left by a morning flight to Singapore en-route to Melbourne, firm in their belief that they had the wherewithal to bring to the knees the mighty Australians on high-bouncing pitches against fiery speedsters. “It’s a tough challenge to play Australia in Australia but we are ready for the challenge. We have the potential and players to win the series in Australia,” Kumble said here about the high-profile contest against Ricky Ponting’s men. “We had a very good series against Pakistan. We won the one-day as well as the Test series which is a confidence booster for doing well in Australia,” proclaimed Kumble who will give way to one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and return home at the end of the four-Test rubber. “We have quality in the side. We have enough experience of Australian conditions to adjust to them which is a pre-requisite of international cricket. The potential in the side and the players’ experience will help,” he said, putting the onus on the array of quality batsmen in the team to set up the victory. source : PTI,google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Try phones before you buy, online

Friday, December 14th, 2007

NEW DELHI: Wish you could play around with the latest mobile phones without having to deal with those pushy salesmen, then TryPhone can be an option for you.

Mobile Complete has launched an interactive Web service that lets mobile users test-drive popular phone models before buying them. The free service, dubbed TryPhone, can be accessed via a Web site, which contains virtual mobile phones that simulate the exact same features of physical phones. The devices appear on the screen larger than normal, allowing people to press buttons, run programmes and compare different devices. Users also get an overview of the phone they’re interested in, as well as read reviews, know technical specifications and watch demos. Users can also do their own freeform actions, including important ones like making a call, taking a photo, adding contacts, or sending text messages. TryPhone endeavours to educate consumers about the different handsets and features available in the marketplace, as well as offer less stressful purchasing experience. The service, which is currently in beta, has four devices available for testing: BlackBerry Pearl, Samsung Juke, LG Muziq, and Apple iPhone. However, Mobile Complete plans to add new phones on a weekly basis. TryPhone doesn’t use flash-based or emulation programmes; instead the service uses Mobile Complete’s DeviceAnywhere Direct-to-Device technology, a combination of hardware and software that connects to mobile devices. Mobile application developers use Direct-to-Device to remotely access devices connected to live networks via software over the Internet. The “automatic crawler” feature scans phones and creates a blueprint of all the pathways, which are used to create interactive virtual phones

Ministers may suggest fuel price hike - secy

Monday, December 10th, 2007
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A panel of ministers asked to look into commodity pricing and due to meet for the first time on Friday may recommend raising retail prices of petrol and diesel, a senior official said. Ministers could also suggest changes in tax and duty regimes for the two fuels, Oil Secretary M.S. Srinivasan said on Monday. A surge in global crude oil prices has left state-run oil companies losing millions of dollars a day as they have to sell fuel at cheap rates to fight inflation and protect the poor. Srinivasan added, however, that a decision was unlikely to emerge from the panel’s first round of talks on Dec. 14. It will be headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. “It should be a set of measures, including bonds, upstream share, what amount will be absorbed by oil marketing companies, duty adjustments and price hike,” Srinivasan said of a possible package. The government issues bonds to state refiners and fuel retailers to the tune of 42.7 percent of their revenue losses due to product sales, while upstream firms share 33 percent. Any formula would need the approval of the full cabinet. Elections which start this week in the key state of Gujarat have been weighing on ministers’ minds as they consider possible fuel price hikes. Once those elections are over, the union government may find it easier to take a decision. The panel was formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in mid-November and asked to report back within a month. Oil Minister Murli Deora and colleagues at the finance ministry discussed ways to stem losses at fuel firms as oil roared to near $100, and have considered a politically risky price increase. Crude has eased in recent days and on Monday was trading at just below $88. India has not raised retail fuel prices this year even though crude has jumped to a series of record highs. Its crude basket has risen by 145 percent since April 2004, but retail prices of petrol have gone up by just 29 percent and those of diesel by 40 percent. Kirsten signed two-year contract: BCCI

Sunday, December 9th, 2007
Former South African opening batsman Gary Kirsten has signed a two-year contract with the Indian cricket board starting March 1, a top official confirmed in Bangalore on Sunday. “Yes, Kirsten has signed a two-year contract with the board and he will formally take charge from March 1, 2008,” Ratnakar Shetty, chief administrative officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said. Kirsten, who arrived here Friday to interact with the board officials and observe what the players do in the ongoing third Test against Pakistan, signed the contract before he left South Africa for India. “We sent the contract through courier and he signed and returned it by courier. But he confirmed this through fax too,” said Shetty. The 40-year-old Kirsten, who would replace Australian Greg Chappell as the permanent coach, would spend some time with the team when India tours Australia starting from Dec 20. “There is a 10-day gap between the second and third Tests against Australia. He will spend time with the team during this period before taking over formally on March 1,” he said. Kirsten, who played 101 Tests and 185 One-Day Internationals before retiring in 2004, is staying in the team hotel. “I am part of the set-up, so I have to see how it (system) works,” he said after arriving here Friday. “I will get to know the players and observe what they do.” Kirsten watched the match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. “He would leave India Sunday night. Kirsten, who had not even applied for the post, was surprisingly called to New Delhi and interviewed recently by the BCCI coach selection committee led by board president Sharad Pawar. Around 20 people, including interim manager Lalchand Rajput, had applied for the post that has been vacant since March when Chappell decided against renewing his contract after a two-year tumultuous tenure. It was during Chappell’s tenure that India suffered a humiliating first-round exit from the World Cup in the West Indies. Former India players Ravi Shastri, Chandu Borde and Rajput have been temporary managers of the team on tours of Bangladesh, England, South Africa and the home series against Australia and Pakistan in the absence of a permanent coach.  source: google news  http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.currentnewsaffairs.com

Microsoft Releases New Windows Server

Microsoft on Wednesday released new test versions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista Service Pack, two highly anticipated technologies. Microsoft also revealed partner resources to prepare customers for the release of the server OS, which the company plans to release to manufacturing on Feb. 27, 2008, the same day as a joint-launch event that also will promote SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Combined, the three mark Microsoft’s major product release cycle for the year, although the products are not scheduled to be released simultaneously. Vista SP1 is expected to be available around the same time, but in a two-part release, the company said on Wednesday. According to a post on the Windows Vista Team Blog, a stand-alone installer will be released to the Web in both x86 and x64 versions for the following languages: English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. About eight to 12 weeks after this release, all of the remaining Vista languages will be released in both x86 and x64 versions. Both Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1 are key releases for the business adoption of the Vista client OS, as many companies have been awaiting the release of both its complementary server OS and first service pack to upgrade their desktops. Windows Server 2008 is an especially important technology for enterprise and business customers, who have been waiting for a major update to the OS for nearly five years. Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate 1 (RC1), the follow-up to Release Candidate 0 in September, can now be downloaded from Microsoft’s Web site. According to the company, more than 1.8 million customers have acquired the evaluation code for Windows Server 2008 to date. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC1 is available to users through the Microsoft Connect Web site. More information about the releases can be found on the Windows Server Division Weblog and on the Windows Vista Experience Blog. Microsoft also has made changes to its Windows Server 2008 software certification program for partners, creating a “Works with Windows Server 2008″ program and offering test tools so ISVs can test their applications to ensure they work reliably on the product. The program and tools are available online. Microsoft ran into trouble with Vista because many third-party software vendors didn’t have applications ready for the OS in time, causing compatibility headaches for customers. Partners whose applications pass the “Works with” tests can then submit test results to be validated for “Certified for Windows Server 2008″ status, which has higher technical bars for achievement.
