Indian American claims solving Einstein’s twin paradox

Sunday, February 18th, 2007
Houston, Feb 18 (PTI) An Indian American professor of electrical and computer engineering at Louisiana State University has claimed to have solved Einstein’s twin paradox, known as one of the most enduring puzzles of modern-day physics. First suggested by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago, the paradox deals with the effects of time in the context of travel at near the speed of light. Einstein originally used the example of two clocks - one motionless, one in transit. The paradox has been described using the analogy of twins: If one twin is placed on a spacecraft traveling near the speed of light while the other twin remains earthbound, the unmoved twin would have aged dramatically compared with his interstellar sibling. “I solved the paradox by incorporating a new principle within the relativity framework that defines motion not in relation to individual objects, such as the two twins with respect to each other, but in relation to distant stars,” said the scientist Subhask Kak. In his work, he uses probabilistic relationships to assume that general properties of the universe do not vary by location. His formula completes attempts by others, as well as Einstein himself. Professor Kak, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, is currently Delaune Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor in the Asian Studies and Cognitive Science Programs at LSU, Baton Rouge. Kak said the implications of his resolution will be widespread, generally enhancing the scientific community`s comprehension of relativity and possibly impacting quantum communications. Sonia lays foundation stone of Terminal-3 at IGI

Saturday, February 17th, 2007
New Delhi, Feb 17: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of a new integrated terminal (Terminal 3) and runway at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here today. Sonia was accompanied by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on the occasion. In its first phase, the airport will be capable of handling 37 million passengers per annum (mppa). The airport is being designed with an ultimate capacity of 100 mppa. With the addition of the third runway, one of the longest in Asia, the airport would be capable of handling new generation ‘A380′ aircraft. It will have 130 check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, automated passenger movers, and a high-speed train connection to the city. Besides, it will also have 30 remote stands with a potential for parking 200 aircraft and multi-level car parking for 4300 cars. The two-tier terminal building will feature the departure complex on the upper level and the arrivals on the lower level. Passengers will greatly benefit as check-in and security clearances will be faster and less obtrusive. For international passengers, more than 70 desks will facilitate emigration procedures. Besides, passengers will also be able to avail a host of facilities like a wide variety of restaurants, shopping and duty-free complexes and a range of other leisure facilities. Business travellers will be able to utilise the most modern communication equipment at the business centre and relax or conduct meetings in the executive lounges. The airport will also have a small hotel for passengers. In 2010, all international and full service domestic carriers will operate from Terminal 3. Access to the new terminal will be via a six-lane road connecting to National Highway 8. The Airport will also be connected via dedicated Metro line. This line is being part funded by Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL). DIAL is a joint venture company, consisting of GMR Group, Airports Authority of India, Fraport, Eraman Malaysia and India Development Fund. It is working towards the modernisation and restructuring of the Delhi Airport. It is estimated that the passenger traffic at Delhi airport will rise to 46.2 million per year by 2015 and touch 80 million per year by 2025. At present, Delhi airport ranks among the world’s worst airports but caters to 11 domestic and 53 international airlines. In 2005-06, it handled 10.47 million domestic and 5.77 million international passengers. source ZEE NEWS . http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

7 wonders: Taj in reckoning

Thursday, February 1st, 2007
New Delhi: The Taj Mahal appears set to figure among the new seven Wonders of the World, with votes polled across the world so far placing it among the top seven candidates for the title. People from around the world are voting to choose the new seven wonders of the world, and the Taj is ranked among the top seven of 21 monuments on the basis of votes cast as of January 31.
The 17th century monument of love built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan does not need a certificate of popularity, but it made it to the grand finale of the multimedia competition to choose the new seven wonders.
The competition started with 77 monuments in the fray, and this was brought down to 21 in the final phase of the New7Wonders campaign.
According to New7wonders.com, the website of the organisers of the campaign, the Taj is among the top seven monuments, and the other would-be new wonders including the Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, Petra, the Pyramids of Giza and the statues of Eastern Island.
As part of a world tour by the organisers to popularise the voting campaign, a hi-tech New7Wonders airship had soared over the marvel in white marble on December 5, 2006.
The world tour started at the Acropolis as a tribute to the ancient Greek origin of the wonders of the world concept. The new wonders of the world will be announced at a official declaration ceremony at Lisbon in Portugal on July 7. source PTI. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

World’s smallest country with sea view - FOR SALE

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007
LONDON, Jan 8 (Reuters Life!) - For sale: the world’s smallest country with its own flag, stamps, currency and passports. Apply to Prince Michael of Sealand if you want to run your own nation, even if it is just a wartime fort perched on two concrete towers in the North Sea. Built in World War Two as an anti-aircraft base to repel German bombers, the derelict platform was taken over 40 years ago by retired army major Paddy Roy Bates who went to live there with his family. He declared the platform, perched seven miles off the east coast of England and just outside Britain’s territorial waters, to be the principality of Sealand. The self-styled Prince Roy adopted a flag, chose a national anthem and minted silver and gold coins. The family saw off an attempt by Britain’s Royal Navy to evict them and also an attempt in 1978 by a group of German and Dutch businessmen to seize Sealand by force. Roy, 85, now lives in Spain and his son Michael told BBC Radio on Monday his family had been approached by estate agents with clients “who wanted a bit more than a bit of real estate, they wanted autonomy.” He suggested Sealand, which has eight rooms in each tower, could be a base for online gambling or offshore banking. Asked to describe the delights of living on what he described as a cross between a house and a ship, the 54-year-old said: “The neighbors are very quiet. There is a good sea view.” Apply to Prince Michael of Sealand if you want to run your own nation, even if it is just a wartime fort perched on two concrete towers in the North Sea. Bookies bet Prince William will get married this year

Monday, January 1st, 2007
London, Jan 1 (PTI) Prince William, the second in line to the British throne and his cousin Princess Zara Phillips, will both get engaged to their partners this year, bookmakers predict. Leading bookies William Hill ranks William 2/1 to get engaged to girlfriend Kate Middleton and 4/1 to have a state wedding later this year. His cousin, equestrian star Zara - crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year - is rated odds on at 1/3 to get engaged to World Cup-winning rugby star Mike Tindall. In the list of odds for events for 2007, England football star Wayne Rooney is backed at evens to marry his sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin. Welsh singer Charlotte Church is rated 2/1 to wed Welsh rugby hunk Gavin Henson. But William Hill is offering 3/1 on pop queen Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie filing for divorce in 2007. People’s wishes to be kept in mind while resolving Kashmir

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006
Islamabad, Dec 26 (PTI) Ruling out any quick-fix solution to Kashmir, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has said the vexed issue needs to be addressed in accordance with the wishes of the people of the region.
In an interview to the Geo TV channel yesterday, Kasuri said there is no possibility of a sudden announcement of any solution to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. “Our Constitution too provides that any solution to this issue is to be made in accordance with the wishes of the people of the region, who are the actual party in this conflict,” he said. The final decision on Kashmir would be taken by the Parliament, he said, adding that there was no concrete step on the issue yet and only ideas were being floated for brainstorming on both sides of border. The foreign minister, however, maintained that there were some hurdles in the way of settlement of the Siachen and Sir Creek issues. He was referring to the on-going talks between Pakistan and India on these issues. A political will was needed to reach final agreement on these issues, he said. On the Iran, Pakistan, India gas pipeline, Kasuri said he made it clear to the Iranian leadership during his Tehran visit that they needed to fix some benchmark on the pricing. An international consultant had made his recommendations in this regard but the pricing issue needs to be taken into consideration by the three sides again, he said. PTI

Sunita excited about her maiden space walk

Saturday, December 16th, 2006
Seema Hakhu Kachru
Houston, Dec 16 (PTI) Indian-American Sunita Williams will make her debut spacewalk along with veteran astronaut Robert Curbeam late tonight as the two will try to complete the crucial task of rewiring the International Space Station and fix its solar array. 41-year-old Sunita, who became the second woman of Indian descent to venture into space after Kalpan Chawla, said she was all “excited” to go out and check the planet. “It should be pretty nice…. It is a great opportunity. Hopefully, it will go just the same and we’ll be just as good,” a smiling Sunita, dressed in a red tee shirt and blue trousers with her loose hair flowing uncontrollably upwards in the zero gravity of the space station, told reporters from the space lab where she joined the Expedition 14 crew. Spacewalking astronauts rewired half of the orbiting lab on Thursday and Sunita and Curbeam will try to complete the task. If they have time they will try to fix the solar array which is part of the space station’s temporary power system. Aware of the excitement she has generated among Indians, Sunita, who has brought with her a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a small statue of Lord Ganesh and a letter written in Hindi by her father, said she wanted the people of India to dream like her, for “if you belive in it, it will come true.” Sunita, who will remain aboard the ISS for another six months, said “It’s just a nice place to live.” The spacewalk, scheduled to begin at 1:37 p.M. US time today (0107 IST Sunday), is the last scheduled mission aboard Discovery. PTI source PTI. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com

MERRY CHRISTMAS - MONEY IS LOOKING FOR YOU

Saturday, December 9th, 2006
I recently joined AGLOCO because of a friend recommended it to me. I am now promoting it to you because I like the idea and I want you to share in what I think will be an exciting new Internet concept.
AGLOCO’s story is simple:
Do you realize how valuable you are? Advertisers, search providers and online retailers are paying billions to reach you while you surf.  How much of that money are you making? NONE!
AGLOCO thinks you deserve a piece of the action.
AGLOCO collects money from those companies on behalf of its members. (For example, Google currently pays AOL 10 cents for every Google search by an AOL user. And Google still has enough profit to pay $1.6 billion dollars for YouTube, an 18-month old site full of content that YouTube’s users did not get paid for!
AGLOCO will work to get its Members their share of this and more.
AGLOCO is building a new form of online community that they call an Economic Network. They are not only paying Members their fair share, but they’re building a community that will generate the kind of fortune that YouTube. But instead of that wealth making only a few people rich, the entire community will get its share.
What’s the catch? No catch - no spyware, no pop-ups and no spam - membership and software are free and AGLOCO is 100% member owned. Privacy is a core value and AGLOCO never sells or rents member information.
So do both both of us a favor: Sign up for AGLOCO right now! If you use this link to sign up, I automatically get credit for referring you and helping to build AGLOCO. http://www.agloco.com/r/BBBH2142
