| Dubai, Feb 16 (PTI) Giving a fillip to their socio- cultural ties, India and Saudi Arabia have decided to hold bilateral exchange programmes involving students, youths and sports persons. The decision was taken during a meeting between visiting Indian delegation headed by Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mani Shankar Aiyar and Saudi officials led by Prince Sultan bin Fahd where the two sides discussed ways of activating a memorandum of understanding signed last year during King Abdullah’s visit to India. To commence with, a 10-member Indian youth delegation will visit Saudi Arabia in March this year. The two countries also agreed on establishing institutional contacts between Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development and corresponding youth institutions of Saudi Arabia, officials said. In this regard an expert team will visit Saudi Arabia in April and exchange of visits by young councillors from India and Saudi Arabia will take place. A delegation from the Governorate of Muzahmia would visit either Faridabad or Mewat. In sports, the two sides yesterday decided to cooperate in training and group exchange programmes. The disciplines that were taken on priority were football, volleyball, basketball, handball, athletics and equestrian. It was also decided that the Joint Committee (comprising experts from both sides) would meet in India in the first week of September this year to finalise the details of the exchange programme. The Saudi side agreed to send its youth delegation to coincide with this meeting. The Indian minister, who is on a two-day visit to the Kingdom, also extended an invitation to Prince Sultan bin Fahd, President of the Youth Affairs and Sports, to visit India, which was accepted. | New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) Security of Indians in Afghanistan, a matter of concern here, will be among the issues of discussion when External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee travels to Kabul tomorrow for two days.
Mukherjee, visiting Afghanistan primarily to invite President Hamid Karzai for the 14th SAARC Summit to be held here in April, will hold talks with Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations.
Discussions will also be held on ways in which India can step up its assistance in reconstruction and development of the war-ravaged country. New Delhi has already announced an increase of US $100 million in assistance from the present level of US $650 million.
With Taliban witnessing resurgence of Taliban forces, security issues are expected to dominate the talks.
“We would like to hear from President Karzai and other Afghan leaders as to how they see the situation developing,” an official said here.
Security for Indians working in Afghanistan on various reconstruction and developmental projects remains a matter of concern, particularly in view of killing of three of their compatriots by Taliban in the last one year, he said.
A number of steps have been taken to ensure their safety but discussions will be held to see if there is need for improving it.
“The Afghan government has done enough for their security. We will assess if we can do anything to improve it,” the official said. He declared the platform, perched seven miles off the east coast of England and just outside Britain’s territorial waters, to be the principality of Sealand. The self-styled Prince Roy adopted a flag, chose a national anthem and minted silver and gold coins. The family saw off an attempt by Britain’s Royal Navy to evict them and also an attempt in 1978 by a group of German and Dutch businessmen to seize Sealand by force. Roy, 85, now lives in Spain and his son Michael told BBC Radio on Monday his family had been approached by estate agents with clients “who wanted a bit more than a bit of real estate, they wanted autonomy.” He suggested Sealand, which has eight rooms in each tower, could be a base for online gambling or offshore banking. Asked to describe the delights of living on what he described as a cross between a house and a ship, the 54-year-old said: “The neighbors are very quiet. New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) In the midst of a raging row over the death sentence of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal, the government today cautioned against “politics” over capital punishment and cited statistics showing only one execution was carried out between 2000 and 2004 when the NDA was in power.

He, however, ruled out the possiblity of abolishing capital punishment which, he said, has been “recognised” in the Constitution. “… Only thing that we have to guard against is politics (over capital punishment),” Patil told the Lok Sabha as he maintained that the government had been “very very careful in hanging any person”. “We shall have to understand under what circumstances death punishment can be awarded,” the Minister said. He, however, insisted there was nothing wrong in retaining death as a penalty, but maintained its use depends on the nature of the crime. In this regard, he also referred to “crimes against nation”, women and children, as he listed out numerous offences that can be punished with death. The Minister, who did not name the NDA, read out statistics that showed only one person — Dhananjay of West Bengal — was executed between 2000 and 2004 out of a total of more than 500 death sentences awarded during that period.
