| Devastated Pakistani cricketers took to the field in their final World Cup match today amid claims coach Bob Woolmer had been murdered by the “match-fixing mafia”.
Police revealed last night they are treating the former England batsman’s death in Jamaica at the weekend as “suspicious” but stopped short of suggesting that he had been murdered.
Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious by staff at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Sunday morning, the day after Pakistan’s shock defeat to cricketing minnows Ireland, and taken to hospital where he later died.
The hotel room remained closed off today with investigations ongoing, a spokesman for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said.
He also refused to confirm or deny unconfirmed reports that marks had been found on the 58-year-old’s neck or that traces of poison had been found.
Former Pakistani fast-bowler Sarfraz Nawaz claimed that Woolmer had been murdered as part of a match-fixing plot.
“Woolmer’s death has some connection with the match-fixing mafia,” he told the Associated Press.
“I’ve been saying this for the last four days that Woolmer’s death is not natural, but it’s a murder.”
But Woolmer’s wife Gill told Indian television station NDTV: “No, I don’t see any conspiracy in his death.
“I am aware that his death is being viewed as a suspicious death.
“He had nothing to do with the match-fixing controversy and any such person being involved is highly unlikely.
“We never got any threats as far as I know.”
Today, as Pakistan took to the field for its scheduled Group D match against Zimbabwe, a minute’s silence was observed by both teams as a mark of respect.
The Pakistani cricketers wore black armbands for the game at Sabina Park - their last at the tournament in the West Indies after the weekend’s defeat ended their chances of reaching the next stage.
The game only went ahead after a meeting between the team management and officials from the local police, the ICC and Cricket World Cup last night.
It was also retiring captain Inzamam-ul-Haq’s final one-day international.
He said: “It’s a tough time for me because the coach is not here. The whole team is disturbed.
“But we will be trying our level best and try to win this game and honour Bob Woolmer.”
Zimbabwe batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri said: “It’s hit the guys pretty hard. It’s a big blow for world cricket.”
Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Last night, following an announcement that tests had been “inconclusive”, deputy police commissioner Mark Shields said a full investigation was being carried out.
“Having met with the pathologist, other medical personnel and investigators there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious,” he said.
“We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development, but we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and the International Cricket Council to ensure that all the parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation.”
Asked if he was saying that Woolmer had been murdered, Mr Shields said: “No, we are not saying that.”
The spokesman added today: “When we say suspicious we don’t rule anything out.”
He added: “I have not been told by any of the investigating officers that there was poison or anything like that.”
More tributes were paid in the UK today.
Former Warwickshire chief executive Dennis Amiss gave his backing to the idea of a permanent memorial at Edgbaston.
During Woolmer’s time as coach of Warwickshire, the county won the NatWest Trophy in 1993 and the treble of County Championship, Sunday League and Benson & Hedges Cup the following year.
Mr Amiss said: “A permanent memorial to Bob Woolmer by Warwickshire would be a fitting tribute.
“He brought great honour to the club. I know the club were thinking of doing something to honour Bob and everyone at the club is very proud of what he achieved for Warwickshire.
“He helped them to dominate the game, winning so many trophies. He was a wonderful coach, the first of the modern-day coaches with the laptop analysis of things.
“He was totally involved at the club, not only with the players but their families. He was a true Bear.”
Earlier, Kent County Cricket Club chairman Carl Openshaw said: “Bob Woolmer was a marvellous man who I knew well from an early age and I had a great regard for him, as everyone did, as a tremendous cricketer for Kent and one of the most successful coaches in world cricket.”
He added that the announcement that the death was being treated as suspicious had come as a surprise.
“It’s clearly inconclusive and there is no point in someone in my position trying to give an opinion on that. It’s a matter for the medical teams. I have absolutely nothing to say until something is conclusive.”

Born a Muslim and brought up and married to a Hindu, Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood’s brand ambassador. The star of Bollywood, who is all the time all over the place, is troubled lately by the happenings in the Islamic world.
At the same time, he feels it is important for him to stand up and be counted, “to be standing for the goodness of Islam”.
As much an ambassador for Islam as Bollywood, Shah Rukh says his childhood fascination with the Ram Lila hasn’t changed.
“But as I’ve grown older, and I see what’s happening to Islam around the world, I think it’s important that even without full knowledge of Islam, I need to be very clearly standing for the goodness of Islam.”
In an interview with the weekly news magazine, Tehelka, the Bollywood icon whose children are being brought up by the tenets of both religions says he stands for what a modern Muslim should be.
“I’d like people to know that Islam is not only about being a fanatic, or radically different, angered person, or one who only does jihad. I’d like people to know that the actual meaning of jihad is to overcome one’s own violence and weakness.
If need be, overcome it violently,” says Shah Rukh. In an interview where he lays bare his soul, he gives a fascinating insight into his identity as a Muslim, a husband, a father, a son and a brother.
Shah Rukh says of his elder sister, who lives with him: “My sister reminds me everyday that I cannot have a life like my father’s.” His sister, Lala, was medically described as having a potassium imbalance and physically, she went all wrong.
SRK, who has often spoken of his anguish at his parents’ early deaths — his father when he was 15 and his mother when he was just 25 — reveals unknown facts about his sister who was traumatised by their deaths. Lala is much better now, but will never be fully well.
“Beautiful girl — physically and mentally, again an MA, LLB (like his father). But no good. After my father died, she got very shocked. Psychiatry wasn’t so big then, it took us about four or five years to find help.
Then it took five-six years for her to get very close to her mom, and then her mom died, so she was really shattered,” he told Tehelka.
By the time she came to Mumbai, she was really unwell, and it took time for SRK to earn enough after which he got her treated in London.
When he prays, he says, the closest he comes to a face are his mother and father — and his dogs! “I love my dog — Chewbacca. Is that blasphemous?” he asks.
We know of Shah Rukh Khan always talking about his son, Aryan, but so little of his daughter, Suhana. He claims that is because he’s basically “shy of women”.
He finds it difficult to play too long with her friends too, and adds that he’s never seen the inside of his wife’s cupboard, or her handbag, or her drawers, or whatever though he married her more than 15 years ago.
Strangely, his closest friends are women — Farah Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol — and most his male friends like Karan Johar are known to be on the effeminate side, too.
His shyness with women extends to his not being able to “pick up a lover” or make a pass. Even if a girl takes the initiative, he quickly kills it with jesting.
Often rammed for dancing in marriages for money, SRK reveals the why and how: “I do perform at weddings. But it is very difficult to afford what I demand. You have to do it like a show, it has to be in an area where nobody drinks and eats, it will start at 9 pm and end at 11:30 pm, the stage will be 30 by 40 feet, we will make our entries, we will not chat with anyone, we will not eat your food, we will not take pictures with your daughter or daughter-in-law, unless we personally want to. We will come, perform, and we will go away.”
The Bollywood Big Dad is not into watching too many films either for fear of getting “corrupted” or “confused” depending on whether it does well or fails. He was supposed to be part of ‘Rang De Basanti’ and the project was lying with him for about a year.
“I was shocked by the fact that I couldn’t read into the script. I just didn’t see any of it,” he readily admits. Shah Rukh Khan also admits that he didn’t like close friend Aditya Chopra’s huge hit ‘Dhoom 2′ because “it lacked sensibility”. - (SAMPURN)

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries today opted out of the race to revive the capital’s defunct shopping cooperative Super Bazar, citing the government’s reluctance in giving it full management control.
Senior counsel Soli Sorabjee, appearing for Reliance, submitted before the Supreme Court that the company has decided to withdraw its takeover bid as the government had refused to amend the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 to enable it gain overall management control.
A Bench headed by Justice B P Singh also accepted Reliance’s plea to withdraw Rs five crore earnest money deposited with the official liquidator, appointed by the court to look into the affairs of Super Bazar.
Reliance had evinced interest in reviving Super Bazar and had put in the highest bid of Rs 288 crore. However, the bid was opposed by Indian Potash Ltd (IPL), which in a joint bid with the Indian Labour Cooperative Society (ILCS), had offered to match the offer.
The government had invited bids in May 2006 after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to examine ways to revive the cooperative super market.
The bench also asked the counsels appearing for the government, IPL and ILCS to consult Registrar of Cooperative Societies on the issue and submit a report in a week indicating steps to be taken to work out the modalities of the revival scheme.
It also directed the IPL-ILCS combine to deposit the money in the court for employees’ liabilities so as to secure them. The matter will come up for further hearing on March 21.

| Viacom, the owner of such shows as “The Colbert Report” and “Laguna Beach,” sued YouTube for $1 billion on Monday, charging the popular online video site with inappropriately publishing more than 160,000 of Viacom’s clips.
Viacom also sued Google, which acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion last year.
“There is no question that YouTube and Google are continuing to take the fruit of our efforts without permission and destroying enormous value in the process,” Viacom said in a statement. “Therefore, we must turn to the courts to prevent Google and YouTube from continuing to steal value from artists and to obtain compensation for the significant damage have caused.”
Under current laws, YouTube must remove copyrighted clips once the owner has identified and alerted the company about them.
Last month, Viacom ordered YouTube to take down some 100,000 clips. YouTube said it complied — and indeed, a search for certain shows turns up a notice that the clip has been removed because it violates copyright rules.
But as quickly as Viacom finds one clip and asks YouTube to delete it, more are posted by different users.
In a statement, Google said that it is “confident that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders and believe the courts will agree.”
The copyright problem has been ongoing almost since YouTube’s inception. But YouTube contends that its users — usually fans of the show — have helped build buzz, such as generating increased interest in “Saturday Night Live” and the Late Show with David Letterman.
Meanwhile, YouTube has formed more than 100,000 partnerships with media companies to post authorized clips online, including CBS.
Some legal experts believe that, up until now, media companies have held off from suing because it means a long and costly battle against Google, a formidable company with more than enough resources to fight back. But the lawsuit could also be a negotiation tactic; up until last month, Viacom and YouTube had been in negotiations to publish authorized clips on the site and share the advertising revenue.

| FORD is close to agreeing to the £450 million ($A1.1 billion) sale of the classic Aston Martin British car business to a consortium led by motor enthusiast David Richards.
The US car maker is being forced to sell the luxury sports car brand in an effort to repair its balance sheet, but will retain about 15 per cent of the business.
Mr Richards has secured backing from Kuwaiti companies Investment Dar and Adeem Investment. Another name mentioned as a backer is Naeem Capital, part of an Egyptian investment bank. Mr Richards is also said to have won support from US investors.
Investment funds from the Gulf region are eager to diversify and have been buying up assets in Britain including Madame Tussauds, P&O and Veridian, the main electricity supplier in Northern Ireland.
The agreement between Ford and the consortium has been hailed by fans of the quintessentially British car as a great day for British motoring.
Mr Richards, 54, a former accountant, is the founder of Prodrive, the group that runs Aston Martin’s racing team, and has long harboured ambitions to run his own manufacturing operation. He is the former head of the BAR Honda and Benetton formula one teams and he has a private collection of classic Aston Martins. Barring any last-minute hitches, he will become Aston Martin chairman. Prodrive had been planning to enter its own formula one team in 2008, although that could now be in doubt.
The Aston Martin chief executive, German-born Ulrich Bez, has overseen a remarkable turnaround in the marque’s fortunes, and is expected to remain in the company. In 1992, production skidded as low as 46 cars. Under Mr Bez, that figure has risen to 7000 cars rolling off the production line last year, and the company is in profit. Mr Richard’s medium-term ambition is to increase that number to 10,000, reports suggest. He also plans to keep building the Aston Martin range, including the Rapide, a new four-door coupe.
Aston Martin has had a long and fruitful association with the James Bond films. Daniel Craig was behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBS in Casino Royale.
Ford took a controlling stake in Aston Martin in 1987 and acquired full ownership in 1994. Ford last year lost $US12.7 billion and announced plans to lay off 44,000 workers and close 16 plants.
Ford could now turn its attention to the sale of its other two luxury British car makers, Jaguar and Land Rover.

SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden, if he’s alive, celebrates his 50th birthday on Saturday, and his friends in the Taliban prayed for his long life.
The al Qaeda leader’s long silence has fueled speculation that the world’s most-wanted fugitive may have died, though many in the international intelligence community reckon Islamist militant Web sites would circulate word of his death.
“He is alive. I am 100 percent sure,” Taliban spokesman Mullah Hayatullah Khan told Reuters, adding that senior leaders were in touch with bin Laden, reinforcing a widely held view that he is hiding near the rugged Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Khan said special prayers were offered by Taliban fighters in camps in Afghanistan to mark bin Laden’s birth on March 10, 1957, in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.
“We prayed that Allah may give him 200 years to live,” Khan said,” by satellite telephone from an undisclosed location.
“When we woke up today, we offered collective and long prayers for him because he is a great mujahid (holy warrior).”
The most recent videotape of bin Laden was released in late 2004 — subsequent tapes released were identified as old footage — and around half a dozen audio tapes surfaced in the first half of 2006.

| As part of his keynote speech today (and during a special press briefing yesterday), Sony Computer Entertainment’ Phil Harrison officially opened the doors on Home for PS3. This unique avatar-based real-time virtual community will enter a large scale beta trial in April and the service itself (which will be found after a free download on the XMB) is scheduled to launch this fall.
Before describing and demonstrating Home in detail, Harrison first discussed what Game 3.0 (the title of his presentation) really means. Essentially, Game 1.0 was represented by the disconnected console and static game discs; Game 2.0 was brought to us by connected consoles (or PCs) that offered static content; but Game 3.0 takes connected consoles to a new level by leveraging online collaboration and user-generated content. Suddenly the content is dynamic and, as Sony says, Game 3.0 “puts the spotlight back on the consumer.” Harrison explained that Sony was influenced by the ideas put forth by web 2.0 – sites such as MySpace and YouTube that are driven by user-generated content. Harrison also made clear that Sony is not trying to trademark Game 3.0; they simply want to get the developer and gaming communities thinking about a trend which Harrison believes “will power the next decade of growth in our industry.”
So how does Home work? Well, you’ll start by creating your virtual representation anyway you’d like. Unlike Nintendo’s cartoony Mii characters, your avatar and the surrounding environment in the Home world is very much based in realism. If you’ve ever made a character in a sports title or RPG, you’ll be very familiar with the facial and body customization options. You’ll also be able to unlock premium accessories, clothing and other content for your avatar by purchasing PS3 games. Once you’ve created your character, you’ll have access to a whole host of features through a virtual on-screen PSP.
The main draw to Home for most gamers will be that it takes the idea of a persistent online world and community and puts it right on your PS3 free of charge. Much like an MMO or other virtual worlds, every character walking around the environment is the representation of another player/PS3 owner. Starting a conversation is as easy as walking up to another character and doing so. You’ll be able to use shortcuts for quick chat, you could type via USB keyboard, or best of all voice chat. The world map is also filled with all sorts of embedded HD quality video, in-game dynamic ads, playable pool tables and bowling, and even embedded arcade machines that will allow for more arcade titles to be downloaded to them.
Where Home gets even more interesting is in the private spaces. Every PS3 owner using Home will get an apartment, which can be customized with just about any media you have stored on your HDD. You can have HD quality videos play on virtual TVs, MP3s play on virtual stereos, and more. Eventually you’ll be able to put playable pool tables, arcade machines and other items in your private place. Your apartment can then serve as a hangout spot for your friends and as Harrison said could even be used for gaming “clan HQ.” You’ll be able to launch online gaming sessions right there from your apartment.
Another interesting feature of Home is the public space cinema. This is essentially a big lobby where all sorts of trailers and user-generated content can be viewed by anyone in the virtual world. Harrison said that Sony worked with a company called Grouper to empower user-created content. Additionally, one could foresee huge marketing potential with Home, as the virtual world can also provide spaces dedicated to publishers, developers, a single game, a cool company or brand or retailer – you name it. Imagine walking into an EA space, for example, that showed streaming videos of upcoming titles and provided other EA related content.
Another hugely important aspect of Home—some would say it’s Sony’s answer to Xbox achievements—is the Hall of Fame.

The two held a clandestine nuptial ceremony at Sudley Castle on Friday, according to officials in Gloucestershire.
The two then held a religious service, where Elton John reportedly gave away the bride, followed by a posh party that hosted Hugh Grant, Kate Moss, Elle Macpherson, Eva Herzigova, actress Patsy Kensit, designer Donatella Versace, who dressed the wedding party.
The castle is owned by Henry Dent-Brocklehurst. Dent-Brocklehurst is also the godfather of Hurley’s four-year-old son, Damien, whose father is media entrepreneur Steve Bing, reports E!.
Hurley and Arun allegedly sold the nuptial photo rights to Hello! magazine.
London’s Daily Mirror said the civil ceremony was officiated by county superintendent registrar Anne Williams with wtnesses in tow. The Reverend John Partington performed Saturday’s blessing.
Hurley, 41, and Nayar, 42, began dating in 2003 after his divorce from first wife, Italian model Valentina Pedroni.

PARIS - At least two Picasso paintings worth a total of nearly $66 million were stolen from the house of the artist’s granddaughter in Paris, police said Wednesday.
The paintings, “Maya and the Doll” and “Portrait of Jacqueline,” disappeared overnight Monday to Tuesday from the chic 7th arrondissement, or district, a Paris police official said.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said they were worth nearly $66 million, and that there were signs of breaking and entering in the house.
The Art Loss Register, which maintains the world’s largest database on stolen, missing and looted art, lists 549 missing Picasso pieces, including paintings, lithographs, drawings and ceramics.
The number of missing Picassos is so high simply because Picasso was so prolific, said Antonia Kimbell, a staff member with the register. She said the Paris theft was “definitely quite significant.”
Although police only mentioned the two paintings, the director of the Picasso Museum, Anne Baldassari, said several paintings and drawings were stolen from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso, an art historian and author of a book called “Art Can Only be Erotic.”
“It was a very large theft,” she said, without giving details.
“Maya and the Doll” is a colorful portrait Widmaier-Picasso’s mother as a young blond girl in pigtails, eyes askew in a Cubist perspective. Maya is the daughter of Picasso and Marie-Therese Walter, his companion from 1924-44.
“Portrait of Jacqueline” depicts Picasso’s last wife.
Among recent missing Picassos is an abstract watercolor stolen in Mexico, Kimbell said.
Major stolen pieces usually sell for a pittance, if at all, on the black market because potential buyers are afraid to touch them.
“It’s unlikely a legitimate dealer would purchase or acquire any of these pieces,” Kimbell said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The “Holy Grail of baseball cards,” the famous 1909 Honus Wagner tobacco card once owned by hockey great Wayne Gretzky, has sold for a record-setting $2.35 million, the seller of the card said Monday.
The buyer has only been identified as a Southern California collector. SCP Auctions Inc., a company that holds sports memorabilia auctions, said it bought a small share of the card. It is scheduled to be shown at a news conference at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday.
There are about 60 of the tobacco cards in existence featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, one of the first five players to be inducted in Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
The seller, Brian Seigel, in 2000 paid a then-record $1,265,000 for the prize card, which is in much better shape than the others.
“This particular one was preserved in spectacular condition,” said Joe Orlando, president of Professional Sports Authenticator of Newport Beach — the company that certified the authenticity of the card. “It’s the Holy Grail of baseball cards
Still, the Wagner cards are so rare that even tattered ones will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, Seigel said.
The others “you could stick in middle of the street and let cars drive over it through the day, take it in your hand and crumple it up, and it still would be a $100,000 card,” said Seigel, CEO of Emerald Capital LLC, an asset management company, who lives in Las Vegas.
Gretzky and Bruce McNall, former owner of the Los Angeles Kings, bought the card for $451,000 in 1991.
During his ownership of the card, Seigel displayed it at several sports collectible shows, showed it at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum and at brought it to opening bell ceremonies for the NASDAQ stock exchange in New York.
“The Wagner card gave me a tremendous amount of pride, excitement and pleasure,” he said. “I hope the new owner will have the same satisfaction I enjoyed over the years.”
The tobacco cards used to be included in packs of cigarettes. Collectors believe Wagner’s cards are rare because he stopped allowing the American Tobacco Co. to use his image, fearing it would encourage children to smoke.
Nicknamed the “Flying Dutchman,” Wagner was the National League batting champion in eight of his 21 seasons and finished his career with a lifetime .329 average. He retired in 1917 with more hits, runs, RBIs, doubles, triples steals than any National League player.
